Our Addiction Treatment Approach
"I’m so tired of this (drug) taking over my life!"
"I don’t want to be using anymore!"
"I can't seem to get off this medication" (e.g. benzos, opioids)
These are some common statements I hear as a doctor working in addictions recovery. Even though most patients are committed to stop using illicit substances, relapse within a few days to weeks is common.
The standard of care for most inpatient substance-use treatment programs includes rapid detoxification and abstinence-based therapies. Conventional treatment includes medications such as methadone, suboxone, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) and psychotherapy.
Sadly, these treatments do not heal the brain.
These treatments do not acknowledge that addiction is a chronic brain disease. Current limited evaluations and finite treatment options contribute to persistent brain and body imbalances, often leading to relapse and reuse of the addictive substance.
Addiction often happens as the end result of a person trying to feel normal with the use of substances or an activity. It is not a moral failing or lack of willpower.
Addictive tendencies may be due to unrecognized factors such as:
concussion and traumatic brain injury
metabolic imbalances caused by food allergies
Addiction treatment requires a broad and in-depth assessment of root causes such as genetic susceptibilities and environmental factors.
